To the Editor:
The North Carolina Religious Freedom Restoration Act is a misnomer. It should be titled the “Bible Trumps the Constitution Act.”
The purpose of this act is to allow discrimination against same-sex couples. However it goes a lot further. This act allows for the denial of marriage licenses to any couple that the clerk finds objectionable based on their own religious beliefs, including mixed religion or mixed race.
Our nation’s laws are based in the Constitution, not the Bible. America is not a theocracy. It is a constitutional republic. If they can’t fulfill their duties, they should resign.
